The Department of Physics & Astronomy at the State University of New York at Stony Brook is regarded as one of the top Physics and Astronomy departments in the country.

The Department of Physics was founded in the early days of Stony Brook when the campus was temporarily located at Oyster Bay.  Initially the Department of Astronomy was founded together with Geology as the Department of Earth and Space Sciences.  In 1997 the Astronomy Department separated from Geology and joined with Physics to become the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
