I am primarily interested in building phenomenological models in M-theory and string theory. Because there are only a few locally-realizable (i.e. geometrically engineerable) constructions which include enough complexity to represent all three families of Standard Model (possibly with exotics), it is natural to ask if any are phenomenologically viable. This question directly probes whether or not quantum gravity---knowledge of the entire compactification manifold---is necessary for an understanding of the origin of three families from string theory.
