Software
(Free unless otherwise noted.)
- PDF Expert: PDF, presentations, sftp
- Textastic ($10; I got it @ ½ price): text editor, incl. html (with preview) & tex; sftp
- Symbol Keyboard for Texting has most Unicode blocks, but missing mathematical alphanumeric symbols (script, fraktur, blackboard, bold, etc.).
- Teχ:
- a-Shell is a Terminal app, with texlive 2021, incl. LuaTeχ. (They're automatically installed when you first run tex/luatex.)
If you use an external text editor (like Textastic), & don't do anything fancy, you can get by using only the command "pickFolder" (to change folders in the usual iOS way) & the usual tex commands.
(Also, to avoid some typing, the tab key ⇥ does command/filename completion, and the up arrow key ↑ scrolls back to previous commands. You can also make aliases.)
- iSH is an alternative Terminal. Includes apk, which can install texlive.
- iWork supports blahtex in its equation editor. It recognizes most Unicode math symbols (e.g., Greek & arrows) as Teχ commands.
- Download video/audio: SW-DLT shortcut. Works with a-Shell; downloads rest of needed software (youtube-dl).
- VoIP phone:
- Google Voice (requires Google account).
Deleting a conversation is well hidden (not just swipe left/click-&-hold, etc.): Select "..." in upper right-hand corner, then Options > Delete conversation . And you have to delete them one @ a time.
- To call emergency numbers, you have to actually know the number (not just "911"), like in the olden days.
- RSS: Newsify (also on macOS).
- Safari add-ons: Ka-Block! (also on macOS), ad blocker (also for RSS readers)
- iPhone User Guide, iPad User Guide (also available as iBooks)
Tips
- Lasso tool (e.g., in Notes):
- To add/subtract space inside handwriting, draw a horizontal (really just nowhere-vertical) line & drag it down/up.
- You can change color of selected handwriting.
- iPad: drag Pencil from bottom corner for screenshot
- Slack has an awful background: The time/date in the upper-left corner is invisible in black on dark purple (in Light mode). You can't change it in the app; you have to use the web page. "Hoth" theme fixes it.
- To delete a Messages app, you need to make sure it isn't hidden: While editing the apps, turn the app on (with the button on the right), click "Done", then swipe it to the left.
- iOS 13 has this great new feature that when you take a snapshot of a webpage in Safari you can select "Full Page" & the entire webpage (not just the visible screen) can be saved as a continuous pdf. Unfortunately, I had problems with a webpage with a floating menu. So in macOS I used "Open Frame in Separate Tab" & opened that tab in iOS (with Handoff).
- Quiet:
- Messages makes this annoying "gloop?gloop." sound when messages are exchanged. Settings > Sounds > Text Tone > None will kill this, any other choice gives those same sounds.
- Mute doesn't, unless Settings > Sounds > Change with Buttons.
- You can set your (default) ringtone to a silent file, transferred from your computer via apps syncing.
(You can choose other ringtones for individuals in Contacts.)
- iCloud file sharing: choose Add People; other options just ship file copy (i.e., non-iCloud file sharing)
- To return to iOS 9 way of unlocking with Touch ID: Settings > General > Accessibility > Home Button > Rest Finger to Open.
- If buttons won't work:
- for turning on, use cable to connect to power
- for turning off, Settings>General>Shut Down
- Tap @ top of window to scroll to top. To scroll to bottom, scroll a little to produce scroll bar on right, grab it till it thickens, then drag it.
- To charge your mobile device from a Mac, it needs to be unlocked, unless you change the setting Face ID (/Touch ID) & Passcode > USB Accessories.
