YITP faculty member Leonardo Rastelli has been named a finalist in the 2014 National Competition for the new Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists.

Working with the New York Academy of Sciences, the Blavatnik Foundation has established these awards in Physical Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences and Chemistry to "recognize and celebrate exceptional young scientists".   Leonardo is a finalist for the Physical Sciences and Engineering Award, in a short list chosen from hundreds of applications. The Awards will be conferred in September of this year.

Institute Professor Christopher Herzog, with support from the YITP and in collaboration with the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics and the Theatre Arts Department, organized the second SBU Science Playwriting Competition. The winning entries will receive staged readings on Wednesday, April 30, 2013 at the Simons Center. More details can be found at the website http://www.scgp.stonybrook.edu/scienceplays .

Supergravity is one of the YITP's and Stony Brook's signature contributions to science, and the Institute is collaborating with the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics to organize a conference "Aspects of Supergravity", on the occasion of Distinguished Professor Peter van Nieuwenhuizen's 75th birthday.

On January 9, 2014 at 5:30 pm, Nobel Prize-winner Martinus Veltman gave a public lecture on the Higgs particle at the Simons Center in the Della Pietra Lecture series.  Professor Veltman was visiting to attend "Aspects of Supergravity", the conference in honor of Peter van Nieuwenhuizen.  More information at http://scgp.stonybrook.edu/archives/9540.
